Basement Basement Basement

I'm really close to finishing the basement. It's about God Damn time too ... I'm pretty fed up with this project. The end result will be excellent, but I'm tired of waiting .... AGGHGHHHH!

Last night I painted the door. Slow drying latex paint and a house full of hairy beasts (sorry Courtney) don't mix well. More than once I had to extract some hair that had landed on the door.

Once I paint and install the crown moulding all I have to worry about is floor trim and carpet (not doing the carpet). I'm so damn close! Little worried about the crown moulding though ... some weird shit I have to deal with.

Chiefs and Chargers

For my groomsmen gifts I bought Chiefs tickets to the Chargers game this year. That meant that for the first time in I-don't-know-why-it's-never-happened-before I was going to a NFL game with a bunch of good friends!

TransformersSaturday night everyone met at my house for some pre-football festivities. The party started with Transformers in HD-DVD. Earlier in the day I brought my big home theater system down from upstairs. Not only was this the first time I had heard my system in my new home theater, but I had never seen Transformers before. All I can say is "HOLY SHIT"! The stereo sounded amazing after I moved the sub (15 minutes into the movie- everyone looked at me like I was retarded). During one explosion I actually heard my first ever standing wave move through my house. For those of you with Bose sytems, a standing wave is when the bass manages to resonate your house just right and you can actually feel/hear the bass slowly sweep through the house. The only bad part of the whole experience was hearing my sub clip a couple of times (I want a new sub real bad). All in all it was awesome and I got some nice comments from my friends on the setup.

Brian is a Rock Star!Next was Wii play time, which was thoroughly dominated by Guitar Hero III. I don't know what it is with that game but Courtney and I just love it to death. Most of my friends there also had a good time beating on the plastic axe. Eventually we decided to call it a night because we had to get up at the butt-crack of dawn for tailgating.

1mg_1235.jpgThe next morning everyone got up and we headed out for Arrowhead. When we arrived we were dismayed to see that they hadn't opened the gates for some reason. We ended sitting in a line of parked cars for about 35 minutes until 8:30. Once we found a good spot to park, I immediately turned my attention to cooking two pounds of bacon (and drinking of course). It was so damn cold that there was a constant fog surrounding the food . Everyone kept adding layers of clothes and the temps continued to drop. Once the bacon appetizers were done I made some tasty breakfast burritos (eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and cheese) and everyone filled their bellies with warm food.

ArrowheadWhen it finally came to game time I was surprised to see all of the empty seats. It might have been the cold weather but Chiefs fans are not being very supportive this year. During defensive maneuvers only 1/3 of the crowd would stand up and yell ... it was very disappointing considering some of the guys there had never been to a Chiefs game. I won't waste much ink on the game (cause it sucked) but it was very cool when Jared Allen caught a touchdown pass. Jared is our best defensive player and he was our only player to score a touchdown (he is gonna bank on his next contract).

50 yard line at ArrowheadTowards the end of the game the stadium was so empty we walked down to the bottom level and stood 3 rows back from the 50 yard line. This was great because we could yell at the Hu-tard and he could actually hear us for once. Nate had a lot more to say though and pretty much called out every guy on offense. After the game I convinced the hydration specialist to throw me a Gatorade and we started our way home.

All in all it was a great weekend! If you would like to see more pics you can find them in my gallery at

Jury Duty

Jury DutySon of a bitch, I just got summoned for jury duty. Sad

Last time I was summoned I actually had to serve as a juror. The prosecuting attorney told me that defending attorney picked me because I was a young male (apparently we are quicker to justify or dismiss acts of violence).

The case revolved around some asshat that broke into his ex-wifes house and beat her with a claw hammer. The case was open and shut except for the fact that we had a fucking retard on the jury panel. One of the charges the shitheal was up for was aggravated burglary (because he had taken something from the house). The "aggravated" part implies that you are breaking into someone's house while they are there. Anyways, this retard juror didn't think that the women-beater should be up for aggravated burglary because he used to live there. If you are wondering how that makes any sense you are not alone. The rest of us normal juror folk spent 4 hours trying to convince rhee-rhee that if the dirtbag was:

  1. In the house while she was there AND,

  2. took something

it was most certainly aggravated burglary. He ended up beating us into submission and we convicted the fuckwad for non-aggravated burglary (among other things).

Oh well, that is my juror story!

Our Weekend (Liberty WWI Memorial and Basement Remodel)

Ukulele and Karate don’t make much sense together. This weekend we went to the Liberty Memorial to see my father-in-law to perform as part of a ukulele tribute to songs of the WWI era. Considering my basement obsession and the thought of an all-ukulele band, I was pretty annoyed about having to go. I have to admit though that it was really enjoyable! I bought a tripod and taped the entire performance as a favor to Courtney' s dad (I guess he is my dad too now). After the show a big wig that runs the memorial came up and asked me for a copy of the show (due to the fact that their equipment had failed or something). I felt pretty special and told him I would do it. He told me he would pay for whatever it cost ... maybe I should send him a big bill for editing and film transfer?!

img_1183.JPGIn terms of the basement remodel, Courtney and I have got quite a bit done over the past two weeks:

  • The wet bar and cabinets are installed.

  • Courtney has finished painting (this was quite a lot of work). All of the receptacle covers and vents are now installed.

  • All of the chair rail is painted and I should be finished installing it this week.

img_1181.JPGI also finished installing the trim around the speaker cubby holes. I'd always wanted to try black stain so we went to Lowes and had some specially made (it was called Onyx). I have to admit it looks pretty cool since stain does not hide the grain as much as paint does. I think I will make the picture frame around the fish tank this week and stain it the same.

Other random thoughts:

  • Chiefs game sucked this weekend.

  • Nascar sucked this weekend (Jimmy Johnson is a sponsor whore and a D-bag).

  • Still working on posting what we did on our honeymoon.

There's more a comin'

Hey everyone that visits my blog (Lynn). Courtney and I just got back from our wedding and honeymoon. I just wanted to let everyone know that we plan on writing up what we did each day and posting it very soon!

Oh the excitement!

Wedding Booze

Courtney and I went to buy the alcohol for our wedding this weekend. We tooled around for about 30 minutes (at Sams Club) with this big flatbed cart loading up cases and bottles until Courtney had checked everything off of her list. I kinda felt like a rock star- you really get a lot of stares with 66 liquor-related items on one big flatbed!

Other thoughts from this weekend:

  • The Chiefs looked real bad against the Jaguars. I hope that Huard isn't well next week and they have to play Brodie Croyle. If we are going to suck our young quarterback might as well get some experience.

  • Courtney and I are in love with the projector! This weekend I finished the screen and Courtney painted the wall- it looks amazing.

Cold Showers

Cold ShowersI just wanted to say that I have started appreciating cold showers in the last year. There is nothing like a cold shower to make you feel refreshed after you get all hot and sweaty!

Chiefs Win

KC WolfI am so relieved that the Chiefs won a game! Three losses (without a win) was not something I was looking forward too. More importantly, during the last half of the game everyone was fired up- Dwayne Bowe and Jared Allen were really impressive. Those two are giving me some hope for this season!

On a related note, I finally got my projector mounted downstairs (part of my basement remodel). We got to watch the whole game on a 128 inch HD screen ... I still can't believe that I will have that thing in my basement all of the time. It will be very kickass to have it this winter. I can't wait to finish my basement and watch an HD movie down there!

Thumbs Up!

DIY Boogers

DIY Boogers

Brian covered in drywall dust.I've had a lot of different colored DIY boogers in my lifetime: black, green, brown- mostly from either spraying painting or cutting wood. Today I experienced a whole new booger color: white! If you guessed drywall dust you are correct ("tell them what they've won Johnny...").

I'm finally getting close to finishing the drywall and I have started sanding joints this week. The drywall dust sucks and it manages to get everywhere. To tell you the truth I don't really care for two reasons:

  1. Courtney does most of the cleaning.

  2. This means I am almost done with drywall!

I thought I hated painting, mostly because you can't get it perfect- it's not even remotely possible. Well, I had not experienced drywall yet. Experience is really the only valuable tool (I have none) and you still won't get it perfect. I feel like I have been doing drywall forever but in actuality it has only been two months. I guess that is not too bad considering the basement remodel has consumed 6 months (so far). At this point I have already completed the following:

  • Moved the main HVAC trunks from one side of the basement to the other. This is a story in and of itself.

  • Moved the main water line from one side of the basement to the other (also new lines for the wet bar).

  • Moved all of the existing electrical and cable lines above the I-beams (including the ground for the house).

  • Framed the walls- including a in-wall 120 gallon fish tank (used screws and drywall adhesive in preparation for ridiculous home theater bass).

  • Knocked out a section of existing wall (by adding a beam) to open up the basement more.

  • Wired 15 receptacles spanning 3 breakers and GFCI's.

  • Wired and installed 13 recessed can lights spanning two zones/dimmers.

  • Wired for a ceiling HD projector (power, vga, component and hdmi cables).

  • In-wall speaker wire installation along with built-in recessed surround-sound speaker cubby-holes.

  • Hung 37 panels of drywall (that's 2000 lbs.) and applied over 300 lbs. of joint compound.

I can't wait to get done with the drywall so I can start a step that takes less than 2 months!

My Peyton Manning

Peyton ManningPeyton Manning whooped some Saints butt last night in the season opener for the Colts, the Saints and the NFL. I shouldn't be too surprised that the Colts won- the Manning/Dungy combo has a NFL best September record of 15-2.

Last year at my Super Bowl party I was the only one in the house rooting for the Colts :( (that opening Hester return was awful). Since I live in Kansas City my friends tell me that I'm not allowed to like the Chiefs and the Colts at the same time. To show their disdain my friends call him the Smirking Man-Bitch* ... I call him "My Peyton" (just to annoy them back). I say tough shit, at least one of my teams can win a playoff game!

*To honor my friends I found picture of Peyton that supports at least 50% of the title "Smirking Man-Bitch"! ;)

Labor Day Weekend

Friday Night

Frank and Lynn came over for some scrumptious seared tuna steaks. We had a good time out on the deck and eventually Mike (my neighbor) and his wife's friend came over too. Later in the night, once Frank and Lynn had gone home, Mike's drunken comrade went Hannibal Lector on our bathroom. :( Somehow she managed to:

  1. Dent\crack one of our picture frames.

  2. Dent\discolor the rim of our toilet.

  3. Scratch the shit out of our wall ... she even managed to take some chunks of paint out (clear down to the drywall).

Now, I don't know what the hell she was doing, but the bitch isn't invited back to our house. After I fix everything else we're gonna have to paint the wall again ... stupid drunk people!

First thing I had to do was replace an upper control arm on my Jeep. This was not much of a surprise because I had damaged the rubber boot when I installed my lift (yes, I felt like a dumbass). Everything went smoothly and I was up and running in about two hours.

Later in the night we went over to Dusty and Niki's house (our neighbors). We had some drinks, devastated a bunch of snack food, and mounted an attack on Mike's house (in response to the drunken rape of my bathroom by his house guest). Dusty had an old grill I was supposed to help him throw away and we decided to drag it over to Mike's house at 1:30 AM and leave it on the front door. The next morning I imagine Mike wasn't too amused as he left it on the sidewalk between our two houses. Dusty and I finally took it to a large dumpster and thanked it for all the good food before we tossed it in.

Our midnight assualt on Mike’s house.

After helping Dusty dispose of his old grill I went to work down in the basement (mudding drywall). While I was doing that Courtney gave Poopers a bath and began preparing for our dinner guests of Justin and Diane. Courtney made pork ribs, twice-baked potatoes, cucumber salad and cherry cobbler pie (all homemade- yum). The food was great but I'm afraid our company wasn't that great ... I spent most of the night staring at the Nascar race on the TV. I guess I shouldn't invite people over during Nascar races unless I don't want them to come back! Hopefully Justin and Diane will give us another shot sometime soon.
Jaik getting a bath.
Yummy ribs!

Monday was much slower (thankfully). I worked on the basement, the bathroom, and took a big nap. Courtney made Mexican stuffed green peppers and we finished out the night watching TV. Sometimes less is more ... less being no crazy bathroom-raping drunk chick.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

101483.jpgI can't wait for It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia! Last season they had crack addiction and steroid episodes that had me convulsively laughing. The new season debuts on September 13th but I found out today that a new episode is posted at

Tony Stewart verbally bitch slaps reporter

Tony StewartAfter the very dull Bristol race (random "new track surface causes sucky race" url) Tony Stewart had a hissy fit with one of the reporters that asked him what he thought about the race:
Smoke: I couldn't give it a better grade than an A+. I mean, it was awesome, it was fun to drive on tonight. It was the most fun I've had racing at Bristol in the whole time I've ever been here.

Reporter: What was it just easier to race? Was it more wide open?

Smoke: Did you watch the race tonight? (long pause, gives him a "are you some kind of fucking idiot" look) Well, what did you think was different about it that you didn't see in the past?

Reporter: Not as many wrecks...

Smoke: OK. Is that all?

Reporter: It was faster?

Smoke: Uh, no. You could move around and run more than one line. You might want to watch more races and watch how these things play out.

Now, coming from a big Tony Stewart fan (that's me), I always cringe when Tony opens his mouth and something like this comes out! I'm not sure if the comment was related to his recent hissy fits with ESPN, but at least it made the race more interesting.

If I find the video I'll post it (not that anyone cares).

New Site!

Welcome to the new site! I'm still not done with the template but I imagine I'll start posting some stuff soon (random thoughts in my head maybe).
